David Andre, from BodyMedia, gave a really interesting talk today at the QSEU13. Here is the key elements with my comments and some copies of slides.
There is a lack of meta-datas, of common standard, of “universal coding language” in the field of quantified self and self tracking. (slides).

There are Ia lot if issues with API. Indeed, you don’t access the firmware (raw data), a data is provided to you after being processed. An other way to say it it that you can access two very different types of information: information collected via API form serveurs / cloud OR information gathered directly from the devices (firmware) .
The way forward that is proposed by BodyMedia is based on the idea of meta data (common structure) and deviation tree (path of transformation of data). (slide). To remember: even if the media (= the most appropriate industry to have great index / meta-data), it’s hard to agree a common format and structure of data.

Thanks Clément for sharing content and feelings about QS event.
Have you had any chance to discuss with BodyMedia about their future (I mean here of course, what’s coming next with the acquisition of BodyMedia by Jawbone).
There must be some very interesting synergies between those 2 players ?
Hi there. No, we did not discuss it. Clearly, the Jawbone portfolio with focus on audio, is clearer now.
